An interior design project where we delved into the art of furnishing with essentiality and purpose, using exquisite design furniture while exploring and cultivating the essence of Scandinavian design. Introducing neutral tones, subtle contrasts, natural materials and organic textiles to blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor, Villa Hondo embraces the volcanic landscape of Lajares and the refined simplicity of a minimalist space.
Furnishing and decorating Villa Hondo has been a journey that started when we first met the client. He spoke with so much passion about the property, its construction and the affinity he felt from the very beginning with this specific plot of land in Lajares. He was living next to it and eventually bought it to start building his vision, step by step, brick by brick. It was meant to be.
It had been an emotional process for him, given the many challenges he had faced in realising his dream on the island, so now he wanted us to finish the project and make the space come alive with the proper furniture and home decoration... without having to worry about it.
Our aim was to create a harmonious living space that embodied the warmth and tranquillity of the surrounding volcanic hills of Lajares, while incorporating elements from Scandinavian design that would exude elegance and sophistication. We wanted to infuse the villa with a sense of simplicity and a strong design aesthetic, using high-end quality furniture. The power of this design lies in its minimalist aesthetic and unwavering commitment to functionality, clean lines and the delicate equilibrium between form, function and interior architecture.
As interior designers, this premise guided us towards a purposeful approach that would transform the living space into a tranquil and effortlessly stylish design oasis where natural materials like solid wood and cosy organic textiles helped us add depth and texture. Embracing the Scandinavian ethos, we opted for a neutral colour palette, predominantly consisting of shades of white, beige, soft greys and black. This choice creates a canvas that is both versatile and soothing, allowing the natural beauty of Fuerteventura, visible from every window, to take centre stage.
Socialising and entertaining was important for our client and the white modular linen sofa in the living room is the perfect element that, with its sleek design and curved lines, offers versatility and adaptability in the usage of the space. We find the same cosiness at the kitchen island were we placed teak wood stools and wooden hanging lamps, to continue the relaxed, casual and welcoming vibe.
As the villa had been designed to allow the best possible exposure to natural light, with unobstructed views over the Calderón Hondo from the living room and breath-taking sunset views over the Mountain of Tindaya and Escanfraga from the swimming pool area, we created a dialogue between nature and furniture to enhance that feeling of openness and peacefulness typical of an indoor-outdoor living concept.
In the dining room, it was a prerogative to have a versatile seating area, so we used an extendable teak wood table where modern, Danish design chairs add warmth and create an interesting contrast with the minimalist white walls and contemporary polished concrete floor.
To respect the space and the elements already present in it, we added black wood for some chairs and stools and black metal for the chandelier, to provide a delicate contrast.
This contrast continues in the master bedroom where the minimalist styling of the built-it shelves, the wood and black metal bed-frame and the Scandinavian lamp add character and a modern layer to the space. Complementing the wooden elements, we decorated with natural fabrics, including linen, wool and cotton, to enhance the tactile experience and evoke a sense of comfort and relaxation. Integrating these accents through blankets and cushions, helped us strike the perfect balance between minimalism and boldness.
As we were selecting furniture and decorations for our client, we decided to give a new identity to the patio, so that the experience of the whole space would feel seamless. Under the shade of a pergola it's possible to comfortably enjoy the breeze of a lazy afternoon on the bamboo modular sofa. The spaciousness of the patio feels enveloping thanks to the whiteness of the pool's edge, the warmth of the teak wood sun loungers, the natural touch of the bamboo furniture and the decorative pastel-coloured cushions that, together with the plants and unique, handmade clay vases and jars, remind of a relaxing, blissful Mediterranean style outdoor.
Thanks to our intervention and a meticulous selection of design furnishings and fine materials, Villa Hondo is a thoughtful interior decoration project where the minimalist principles of Scandinavian design blend with the surrounding landscape and every material respects and celebrates the importance of handmade furniture and crafts.
A journey that finally leads our client to his safe haven.
